David Paulino: The Player To Be Named Later

David Paulino was acquired today in exchange for the final piece the Jose Veras deal as the player to be named later. The 6'5, 19 year old righty has never thrown above the GCL level and posesses an upper 80's fastball with a lot of room for projectability moving forward. David profiles very similarly to his brother Brenny Paulino whom is also a Tigers farmhand. Brenny possessed a modest fastball early on with room for projectability, and later filled out his projections to fire mid-90s fastballs with ease upon entering pro-ball. David has had trouble with injury in the past which has certainly hindered his development. This summer Paulino underwent Tommy John surgery which will likely put him out for the entire 2014 campaign as well. Unfortunately there is no video to break down to identify stress points or mechanical inefficiency that has lead to injury, in fact I was not even able to find a picture of the kid. Don't be surprised if Paulino has an extended stay at Weiland Island, but expect him to surface in 2015 and hopefully make some waves. I would've been pleased with getting nothing at all in return on the PTBNL considering how high I am on Danry Vasquez, so this is just a bit of extra icing on the cake for me. Paulino is an interesting prospect with a big arm, and this may end up being a fantastic buy low if he turns out anything like his brother did. Although small sample size comes into play, he's had fantastic SO/BB numbers thus far as well as a high GB rate which is encouraging. Here's a look at his numbers via baseball-reference.com.
